Important Tips To Remember Before Catching A Lizard

Before we get into the different methods you can use to catch a lizard, there are a few things you need to know before you just attempt it.

Before you attempt to catch a lizard, make sure you understand these tips first!

Some Lizards Are Poisonous

Before you go in guns blazing trying to catch a lizard, it is incredibly important for you to learn which lizards are poisonous in your area.

Most lizards are going to be harmless, but on the off chance that you do come across a poisonous one, it’s better to know so you can avoid it and call in some professional help.

If you do come across a poisonous lizard and you know it’s poisonous, never try to touch it with your bare hands and stay as far away from it as you can while you call the correct authorities.

Make Sure You Have The Right Equipment

You will need a few different things in order to successfully catch a lizard and you should really make sure that you have them before you attempt to catch it.

Use the checklist we have provided below to make sure you have everything you need.

  • A net with a handle.
  • Items to construct a humane trap: a box, plastic wrap, and tape.
  • Foods that are appropriate for lizards: insects, vegetables, and fruits.
  • Thick leather gloves.
  • A long-handled object in order to direct the lizard.
  • A container that has enough holes to keep the lizard in temporarily.

Once you have all of these things gathered, you will have a better chance of catching the lizard and safely removing it from the position in which you found it.

Different Methods To Catching A Lizard

When you are ready to catch a lizard and you know it’s not poisonous, you can use one of the following methods in order to catch it.

If you have never caught a lizard before, always remember to move slowly and carefully, and do your best to remain calm in the situation.

Bait & Net

The first method you can use is the bait & net method. For this method, you will need a plastic jar, insect or fruit bait, and a net.

Take the bait and put it inside the jar and then just place it in an area where you are seeing lizards frequently.

Live bait is the best kind of bait to use for this method, but dead bait and fruit also work really well.

You will have to be patient using this method and you might have to just set it up and leave it alone for a few hours.

You will need to stay close by though because as soon as a lizard gets into the jar, you need to cover the hole with a net to keep the lizard in.

Cardboard Box

For this method, simply take a cardboard box and wrap it entirely in plastic wrap. You can also use tape to secure it a bit better.

You will then need to make a 4 to 5-inch-long hole in the plastic of the box’s center. Finally, place your bait over the hole.

You have to then wait for the lizard to notice the bait and it will come over to the hole and enter. Because the hole is narrow and cut in the middle, this means that it won’t be able to get out once it has entered.

You should still stay close by while you are waiting for a lizard to enter the box, but you don’t have to be as vigilant with this option as the bait and net method.

Lizards love the light that emits from lamps because it is warm. Using a lamp to catch lizards is great because it is most effective at night, which is perfect if you are trying to catch a nocturnal lizard.

Turn off all the other lights in your room and place the lamp on the ground at its lowest setting. Prepare a towel, cup, and paper towel to catch the lizard and wait for two possible outcomes.

The first outcome is that the light will attract lots of insects and then the lizard will come to get the insects, or the heat of the lamp will draw the lizard instead.

Regardless of which one happens first, when the lizard is by the lamp, simply put a towel or cup over it, then gently lift it up by the belly.

This is one of the easiest methods you can use and it’s great for beginners. Simply take a light towel and use your hands to cover a lizard when you see one.

Remember, you don’t want to kill the lizard, and it will freeze up as soon as it’s covered, so you don’t need to use force for this option.

Catching lizards is quite a challenge, especially if you have never done it before. But if you use the methods we have provided, you should be able to catch a lizard in no time at all.

Just make sure that you are prepared before you catch one and make sure that you are not going after a poisonous lizard!
